Not much is recorded about this theater. It was located at the corner of Shelby and Lafayette streets, across from the Lafayette Building.
The Shubert-Lafayette was a legitimate theater, meaning it did professional drama and some forms of musical comedy.
The theater contained elaborate architecture throughout and had murals by Maxwell Parrish.
The theater first opened as the Orpheum in 1911, then changed its name many times, starting in 1915 to reflect the street it was located on.
Last operated as the Shubert-Lafayette, it closed in 1965 and, we assume, demolished soon after.
Today the site is a parking garage for employees of the Dime Building. |
