The Hotel Ste. Claire was built at Randolph and Monroe streets in Detroit in 1892. Much of Detroit's political history was hammered out in its bar. It was a ritzy place until the roaring '20s came and its business went. Between Prohibition and newer hotels opening, it struggled, closing in November 1933 because of unpaid taxes. It was razed a few months later. The site has served as a parking lot ever since.
